Interior life, dark matter, the unconscious, the world of spirit. 'Hidden' territory expressed through 'simple visibles'. For me these 'other' dimensions are best evoked by the most familiar spaces, everyday materials, ordinary things made extraordinary. An attempt, through the process of looking deep into the heart of what is closest to hand, to bring its uncanny self to light.
My work has always circled around the domestic subject, in a sense the locus of the self in its most inward state. This path has led me to the current exploration of how architecture may convey, conjure, this subject and indeed work on the viewer in more ways than we understand. The focus on the unhomely is to my mind a means to rediscovering lived space (where
doing often occludes being, becoming), its unsettling quality a subtle provocation to transforming both the space of the work and the perception of the viewer.
Searching for ghosts at the edge of the world - the limits, paths, where knowledge meets its dark other, the knowledge of the existence, but not the
inner experience, of what is not known -
uncanny space, hovering between levels of realities and fictions. Through the tropes of lived space I seek to communicate that almost magical edge, approaching an ethereal boundary, analogous to the literary imaginary, where just the suggestion of built space and the sketching of a certain configuration are enough to conjure entire worlds of experience, a universe of meaning.
